Hi,

I've been having intermittent problems with my speedo. It's been working about 80% of the time but it does stops and sticks on 0 mph either at start or while I'm driving. It could be very coincidental but it will usually but not always work again when I switch on some of the electronics such as the heater or the wiper. I’ve tried cleaning all connector I could find including the connector to the speedo but it still happens. Very confusing but I suspect a sensor or earth problem.

Can any tell me where on the Rover SD1 gearbox is the speed sensor for the speedo? How do I get access to it? Is the earth for the sensor on the centre channel under the door handle or at the front of the car near the radiator? Any help would be very appreciated.

Don't know where the earth is on the Griff, but the Vitesse box speed sensor is I assume the same as mine on the V8S of which I've had a very similar problem. If you draw a vertical line down from the gear selector on the LH side of the box, it is below the reversing switch, about 2/3 down the box, or 1/3 up from the bottom .
The sensor has twin wires going to it which about 12" away goes to a connector which was tied to the chassis with a cable tie on mine, check that if it is the same it is not crimping the wires, which was the problem I found on mine. I took the connector plug apart (it has a rubber boot over it protecting it) to clean up the contacts just in case. Mine is now on 99.9% of the time, the 0.1% I put down to character .
I hope this helps.

Thanks Harry,

Can I get access to it from under the car? Will take a look later this week as I have access to 4 point lift at a local garage.

Although Harry's car is a Chimaera with a V8S body, the Griff gearbox is in a different postion due to the remote linkage so you may need to add about 12 inches to all references. To get to it from underneath normally requires the exhaust to be removed. Removing the centre console can give access but it can be tight and depends on exactly where they cut the holes in the GRP.

One word of warning if you do replace the sensor: there are two types for the SD1 box, get the wrong one, which is what I did, and your speed will read doble what it should, I was doing a steady 150mph round the M25! It's all down to the pulse rates, given off by the sensor. Good luck.
