I'd welcome some advice about a minor problem with my 1998 Griff 500. For a variety of reasons the car has only had very limited use over autumn and winter. I noticed a while ago that it was running rough and found that the plug lead had detached itself off the plug and extension to no.2 cylinder on the left hand side looking from the front. I replaced it and all seemed well (ish). Noticed today that in fact the plug lead and cap is barely attached to the plug and extension cap because the inside clip has gone awol.

I'm hoping that I will be able to buy an individual replacement plug lead with appropriate cap including the inside clip. This seems to be case from the helpful TMS website. Can anyone out there confirm that it's possible to buy an individual lead rather than the whole set?

In the longer term, as the car is 1998 but only 10000 miles is it likely that the original leads have degraded and need replacing and, if so, has anyone gone down the ACT / Magnecor lead route and if so does it make a worthwhile improvement? Is it the sort of job I could myself by replacing each lead individually so as not to mess the order up or should I get the bits and ask thoise nice chaps at Fernies to do them when they service it next month?

Any ideas welcome, please.

Becky

I bought magnecors and new plug extendors for my 96 Griff. The difference was quite spectacular (mainly throttle response). But that can only be because the old leads were breaking down. Indeed when I removed them, some of the rubber caps came away and the leads themselves showed some detrioration. New ones won't improve performance, but they'll fix any underlying ignition issue arising from your current leads.

You can get magnecors from Tim Lamont at ACT, he advertises on this site. He's very helpful. If you talk to him he'll tell you it is worth replacing all the extenders as well.

In the meantime, I replaced all my plug extenders and hence have a bag full of old ones. You're welcome to a couple if you want to replace the one with the broken clip. Drop me an email thu profile.

best regards

Thanks for the reply. It sounds like the Magnecors may be worth a go. Thanks too for the offer of replacement plug extenders but it's the clip in the cap at the end of the ignition lead that's supposed to hold it onto the head of the extender that has gone awol.

TMS will send you a single lead, they did for me. It was just over £5 and I think it may even have been the same lead as yours. I tried to get one locally but the end connections were not the same. Mine had come loose and was resting against the manifold which destroyed it completely.

Cheers,

Simon.
