Oily Griff

I appear to have a problem with the griff, there is some sort of oil dripping onto the front of the bottom of the exhaust manifold when it is standing in the garage. It is on the front right hand side (as you look at the front of the car) and it is a sort of red in colour? Anyone any ideas what it could be?

I've had the saem thing, I assume you have PAS (if not don't read on). There's a couple of rubber pipes under the PAS pump joined by a metal 'U' bend, if the clips securing this lot together are not tight fluid can seep out and find it's way onto the manifold.

Power steering hydraulic fluid. Try tightening the jubilee clips on the pipes under the power steering pump.

If you don't have power steering, its something else

i have the same problem as you, red oily liquid falling onto the first joining bracket of the exhast manifold, on investigation this should be sorted by tightening a new clip round the rubber pipe above, the one with the metal u bend in as mention above.

Thanks all, I do have power steering so I reckon it must be this.

Thanks for the help guys, it was one of these pipes so I had to replace a clip, unfortunately the rest of the oil came out when I changed it. I have put new oil in but the pump is still making whining sounds. Do I have to bleed the system? Is there a bleed nipple anywhere?

Don't worry I haven't driven the car like it.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

The PAS system self-bleeds so just top it up to the mark inside the cap and then check and top up if necessary after a short run.
My PAS only whines quietly at full lock- I think 'they all do that sir'

They do indeed, Sir, but mine gets noticeable after a weep - which it has been doing for the last, oh 35,000 miles! The Garage has solved one problem last time and I believe there is another pipe which gets brittle so they are having a look at that next. Otherwise it's quite common for the rack to leak, and an expensive job for a new one or recon! ouch!

I haven't got the "luxury" of PAS on my Griff, but my brother-in-law has, and he has just had a brand new rack fitted which whines on full lock as well so I would think this is normal.

Thanks guys, all sorted now.

What I meant was that the power steering whined not on full lock but just as you were turning the wheel. I have run the car for a bit and turned the wheel a few times and it appears to have sorted itself out now.
