Frazzled Footwell Carpet

The breakdown of the o/s exhaust manilfold heat shield has caused so much heat transfer to the footwell that a section of the carpet is disintegrating (wondered what the smell was!). Luckily the fibreglass seems solid. I have read the thread about the heatshield renovation, but any ideas on covering this unsightly patch? A few ideas spring to mind:- 1) A patch of carpet (will never match) 2) A rubber scuff patch a la heel patch). 3) A polished alloy scuff plate (sounds good). Anyone had a similar problem and found an aesthetically pleasing patch up??
