i helped out my friend the other night by trying to jump start his dead griff 500. connected correctly and had my engine running above 2000rpm. couldn't start his car so gave up. drove mine home and after stopping for petrol (optimax) and then restarting the battery light came on as well as the ignition warning light . the car now hesitates in all gears at around 2500rpm and the volt guage is down to 11.
what damage has potentially been done?
cheers

Sounds like the fuse link in the starter to alternator cable might have gone. Its under the car, next to the off side engine mount.
Or the alternator's fragged.
Or the wiring's fragged.
Where did you connect the jump leads (on yours)?

If you connected to the battery it should be fine, I suppose if your battery was on it's way out (maybe not showing any signs of being tired) then this could have tipped it over the edge. Check your alternator fuse and if that is ok then bung the battery on charge for a day, see if that cures it.

Good luck

D.

cheers david, will try that. the battery was replaced about 4-5 months ago. there is a built in optimate which i have never used, will that be as good as a battery charger?

Yes, low battery voltage and no-charge warning light do suggest the battery isn't charging. I would suspect the fusible link, but while you're in the engine bay just do a quick sanity check that the fan belt hasn't fallen off or something.

but would either problem be responsible for the slight hesitation at 2500 rpm?

It could have also fried the ECu and/or the sensors. Extreme but has happened. May also be caused by low voltages screwing up the ECU sensor readings as well.
