One of the things i had planned for this winter was swapping the standard bulbs for Philips Vision + bulbs on. Now someone warned me about them, saying that these bulbs emit more heat and wil ruin the inside reflector. Does anyone know of these problems.

My best rule for TVRs if 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'.

I have heard of the heat/current melting the wiring and damaging other bits.... but not the reflector.

I don't know what you drive, but if you have driven a Griff you'll know that driving by the power of a couple of tealights at night is not exctly fun....it is definitely broke and could do with fixing.

"Tealights"!!!

I think you're being unfair to the power of tealights

Philips Vision plus take no extra power and give off 50% more light. There is no extra heat generated, unlike the "off road" high wattage jobbies that also put extra strain on the the wiring.

Try coffeelights - they're much stronger - esp double expresso

The Halfords '30% brighter bulbs' do what it says on the packet, if you are concerned about the Philips bulbs

I have recently changed from non E-marked 100W bulbs to 55w bulbs with Xenon gas rather than Halogen (still filament, not HID) and the light is both brighter and more white. I don't think I got any advantage from the higher power bulbs because my wiring loom couldn't deliver the extra current required. Also, the high power units blew more quickly (record was one in 4 days). Every time, the base of the bulb glass had shattered, presumably because the fitting couldn't dissipate the extra heat.

For a comparison, regular 55W bulbs draw just over 4.5 Amps whereas the 100W boys draw well over 8 Amps, something that most European car's lighting looms weren't designed to deliver.

What I would add is stay away from these all weather things. I've tried about 4 different types and they are all crap IMO.

Recommendations...? www.piaa.co.uk They are the best IMO, but expect to pay the thick end of £60 a pair for the bulbs. That's £180 worth to do the front of my car ('96 Golf GTI is 3 x H1 either side)

Next up from these is an HID conversion. There are manufacturers that do conversions for existing lenses to HID Xenon lighting (I think PIAA may do these now). Some are better than others - it's all to do wit the alignment of the filament or something. Anyways, expect £600 a pair for these, but they're the ultimate. FYI, PIAA do lighting for WRC cars and LeMans type stuff, so they are top-notch. Up there with Hella, Cibie etc.

Clive at Zertec will build HIDs into Griff/Chimaeras and Cerbies I believe (I think they are Hella units - Clive?). I've seent hese and they are fantastic.

Alternatives...? A roof rack with 3 KC Daylighters on it like my model buggy below...! Love those smiley faces...!

Try Mod-wise for a complete rewire kit with Philips Bulbs as well, so thats 25% gain by a rewire and then a further 50% gain with the bulbs. Of course HID is the best but at a price, or is it so expensive??
