That jolly nice chap Mark Adams has just worked his magic on my Griff 500 and the beast is much improved. Throttle response is lightning and it goes like greased weasel poo. Yippee.

Only one fly in the ointment for me......230BHP yes thats right my car has only 230BHP at the fly wheel!! Only one third down then. There has to be an explanation for it. Well it still outstrips my mates 996 so I'm not too bothered its just a shame.

What did Mark have to say about it? He's pretty good at diagnosing this sort of thing.

Could be a blocked airfilter, I had a customer with a Griffith that wouldn't "rev out" properly, turned out to be the flexible pipe from the airflow meter to filter housing, the inner wall of the pipe had come loose and was blocking the tube.
at what rpm did it produce max power ?

Is that you Martin - nice Green Griff I saw on Friday at Mech Repairs?

If it is, don't worry about the actual BHP figure. Most of the other TVRs you see figures for were done at Power Engineering. There is a pretty major difference between the numbers from the two establishments!

The engine dynos at John Eales and V8 Developments all agree with Power Engineering's rolling road results to within 2-3BHP. However the dyno at Mech Repairs shows the same wheel figures as Power Engineering, but the losses are much less which means a lower total.

On average the Mech Repairs dyno shows around 48BHP less on a car of this class. So just add approx 48BHP to get the number to compare! I make that about 278BHP which means a strong motor.

Most 500s dyno in the range 260-270BHP, but you do get the odd 250BHP and 280BHP extremes. SGirl has the strongest one yet seen at 302BHP. By the way cracking the 300BHP barrier gets you into the rarified atmosphere of the "Beast's Hall of Fame".

There is also an "Ultra Beast's Hall of Fame" for which you need over 400BHP. There are only two there so far. Steve Heath had one in each at one time!!!!

Sometime I must get around to finding out why this is so different. My own 4.8 which is just being refitted has been on John's and V8D's dyno, and will go on both sets of rollers as a reference.

And if it is you Martin, please do come back to let me sort that idle valve for you.

Have Fun!

Mark, do you have any rough figures for torque? The sheer ability with which the Griff knocks up 20mph increments in 5th leads me to believe the TVR torque figures are honest, even if the power is a bit off target.

I also understand from SGirl you did a great job on her Griff. Mine is fine but I would be interested in getting you to give it a once over on the dyno. I work very close to Uxbridge, can you send me some details via my profile? Cheers.

Thanks Mark! Made my day. It was a real pleasure watching you work!

Mark it is me with the GGT (Goping Green Thing) and I have to say your magic touch has transformed the car into a smooth beast, if ever there was one.
Your dedication to the cause is admirable but the idle when cold is down to nothing more than a misaligned housing for the stepper valve. Bye the way it doesn't hunt when cold anymore it just settles at the warm idle speed.
Oh and the guy with me on Friday has just bought a 4.0 HC Chimp so I thing you may have some more work (not that you need it!).
One last thing did you sort that gas/petrol disco out we are dying to know.
