I bought a Griffith 500 97, i believe the diff has gone, how could i tell if it has, how dangerous is it driving if it is.... rp

Why do you believe the Diff has gone??? Is it making a noise? or are you getting transmission shunt?? If its making alot of noise I'd get it looked at ASAP. I've never heard of a Diff siezing but I wouldn't want to be on the wrong end if it happened.

I belive one common thing that can go on them is the shims, they take up the "slack" between the crown wheel and pinion, and need to be set to the correct backlash by a tool (cant remember its name). You normally can tell if these are gone with clonks in the drive. I've replaced these on older RW drive cars, and it's a bit of a pig, I'd imagine on a Griff it wouldnt be an ideal DIY job. Take it back to a dealer Rob.

I drained the oil, and what i believe was a outer casing of a bearing fell out, and some other bits of metal,it looked the same as a trailer bearing case, rp
