I have just taken delivery of my Grif 500. It's early days but right now I reckon it's the best thing I have ever bought.

I had PAS fitted by the TVR main dealer from whom I bought the car. It works fine but I am slightly surprised by the wheezing noise that comes from the engine bay when the PAS pump is doing some work. My other car has PAS and it's silent. I'm not really bothered by it but would like to know if it's normal.

My Chimaera (identical as far as the PAS is concerned) makes a wheezing noise only when towards the extremes of the rack's travel, and when the fluid level's getting low. Ergo, check fluid level (top up with automatic gearbox fluid if below halfway mark).

Got to agree that it's likely to be low fluid level. It's quite common for the rack to weep oil (mine has been doing so for about 31,000 miles!) at avery low rate of knots......

Apparently Rolls Royces do the same. So good company!

Mine did the very same. Every few weeks the fluid levels would drop sufficiently such that on full lock you can hear it churning. Turned out to be nothing more than loose jubilee clips/hoses. If you can feel fluid under the reservoir or spot it on the floor you probably have a slow leak

I think they all make a noise to some extent. As my old rack was expiring it gradually got louder. Now with a new rack fitted, full reservoir and no leaks it can still be heard towards full lock at low speed.

Cheers,

Simon.

Mine is currently off the road while the rack is sent back to the factory to be reconned due to a significant leak from the O/S gaiter.

They are known to leak from this part as the end bung/seal work loose and ultimately pops out leading to all the fluid being deposited on the road. When I first had the car there was no noise. Then it started to develop a wheeze and then when checking over the car I found the level was low and then found the leak. Had them check it at the service and next thing I know I am without the Mistress for 7 - 10 days.

Keep an eye on the level and check for obvious signs of leaks. It may well be a pipe leak somewhere, mine had a small one of these aswell.

Depending on how much you use the car check the fluid levl every few days to check that you are not loosing masses of the stuff too quickly and see how you go from there ....

Cheers

I've had the same sort of problem, although I have traced this to a leek from one of the hoses to the pump, it weeps a small amount of fluid past the top of the jubilee clip, tighted as much as possible but still does it. I have cured the problem now by using different fluid, Slick 50 it's much thicker (Halfords), looks like wall paper paste, and has stopped the leak. No subistute for sorting the leak but a reasonable short term fix.

Thanks for the ideas - I'll check for leaks and low fluid level. A very minor niggle with an otherwise fantastic car.

It also screws up the pump and rack. Get it out quickly and get a new pipe fitted.
