That was the best decision for long to escape our bad weather and taking the Griff for what it is intended to. A trip down to good old Italy. The weather was perfect and all of us enjoyed great tours around Lake Garda and the surrounding mountains. Obviously the Griff and me, the girlfriend a bit later not before recovered from travelsickness (bend-worm).
There is an unbelievable labyrinth of steep and narrow mountainroads and neverending bends followed by bends. Nearly no traffic, but not many overtaking opportunities if you have the wrong guy in front of you or a too cool one to be scared of a bad Griff in the mirror.
Most important thing is to have a really good map and a full tank or/and spare petrol with you.
There is nothing but nature and only extremely remoted nearly abandoned little villages but no filling stations or anything and you even could get lost quite easily.
Going around the Lake Garda, Vicenza and finally the obligatory visit into Milano brought often words like "bella machina" to our ears and we could only guess from the sound of the words and the smiles into our direction and some waves and thumbsups that the Griff made a pretty good figure in contrast to all the bootnailers with flat noses on their windscreen.
The Griff did a great job in all situations,
was it the autostrada-cruise at 100mph, some fast actions, or just the thunderstorm in the narrow valleys, but kept the rocksteady 90°C in all tailbacks and city-traffic even in the fantastic and warm weather.
Room enough for all the luggage we needed for the short week and even managed to keep the parcelshelf
clear for the peace of mind while leaving the car parked without top.
The trip home turned out nightmare, lots of traffic jams on Italian roadworks and heavy rainstorms for 500 miles from the Italian Border home.
And there a most funny thing happened while going 95mph on highest wiper-speed suddenly the wipers got into a tangle like a knot and - you guessed it - stopped working.
Not really amusing, on the fast lane behind another car in all that water and no sight and no place to stop
(there is no emergency lane on that German motorway).
After a kind of blind flight I decided to open the window and tried to reach the now one wiper to detangle it - hey, it worked troublefree till home, me avoiding the highest wiper speedselection.
Finally this 3000 mile trip turned out as a big pleasure, because we definitely have choosen the right car for that great tour.
I hope I don´t bore you all with that story, but I had to tell you.
You know, those happy moments!

Just booked a honeymoon to Lake Garda. Have heard nothing but good reports about the area.

We were having trouble getting a flight on the day we wanted so I suggested hiring a fast/interesting car and driving down.

Fiancee wouldn't wear that idea though

Though she quite liked the idea as another holiday, as she loves driving as much as I.

Cheers, Phil

Nice story, Griffithy. Bet the v8 sounds around the bends up in the mountains sounded great. Best to do it at this time of year to avoid setting off any avalanches!

Hutch

Try some RainX on the screen - then you only ever need slow speed or intermittent wipe, even in a heavy down pour. It's amazing stuff.

God. Can you imagine 1st night at your honeymoon destination after 1000 miles of arguing about the directions! :shudder:

Seconded!

Did a run down to Italy last year via France/Belgium/Germany/Swizerland. Its amazing how many racetracks we passed on the way by accident. If you tried really hard & linked up lots of public track days, it could make for quite an entertaining route!

Lake Garda is great. Was there this summer to chill out for a few days.

Only thing is in some areas it is mini Germany. They were everywhere.

We stayed in Sirmione, Malchesini (sp)and somewhere else.

Sirmione is really nice and I can recommend the restaurant opposite the castle. Top nosh !
