OK I know this has been done several times before and I have read the previous threads, honest.

I decided that I am going to do the full wire brush, hammerite and waxoyl on the Griffs underside this winter. Halfords have two types of Waxoyl, the first being for Internal use and the second for external (wheel arches etc.) use.

The internal waxoyl appears to be thin and I assume can be used with the spray kit that I read most of you guys n gals use.

The external waxoyl appears to be much thicker and I assume will have to be applied with a brush.

As I intend to cover areas of the chassis and wishbones etc. I would expect to use the thicker external waxoyl. Has anybody used this (and if not why?), and if so what the best way to go about it.

Cheers
Steve

Just a little reminder. The car and waxoyl needs to be room temperature when applied, otherwise it will not penetrate/stick . If ignored ,the result will be a beautifull looking chassis that rusts under the treatment.

I've waxoyled mine about 6 months ago , you don't need to paint it on, you can use a hand pressurised pump and spray nozzle which can be bought seperately, but you will need the cylindrical container to pump it out of, put the waxoil container in a bucket of very hot water for about 20 mins and add a drop of white spirit to thin it out , give it a good shake and spray away DON'T forget to put plastic bags over the brake discs. try not to get any on the exhaust manifolds or cat either, Phew it stinks when you start the car, I wire brushed the chassis and wishbones down, coated them in a flexible underseal and waxoyled over when the paint dried, also i smeared the steering joint behind the drivers wheel and anti roll bars with coppergrease.

I didn't know that. Perhaps instead of getting my car treated in a week or two, I should wait until next year when the weather warms up next year?

I use a mixture of the two types of waxoyl. They appear compatible. I wouldn't bother with the hammerite paint, just get a thick coat of waxoyl everywhere. I've found that hammerite paint chips off easily if the surface is not completely grease/oil free.

But this is the critical part of the process - spreading Waxoyl across crumbling powder coat with retained moisture will create a perfect environment for corrosion - that you won't see becaue you've spread stuff all over it. Best to degrease / steam clean the surface after you've done the wire brushing - then dry completely - then apply the hammerite then apply the waxoyl

Many thanks for all the advice gents.

Qube - What make of flex underseal did you use?

Redwedge5 - When using the mixture did you apply with the spray kit or brush?

Hutch - What did you use to degrease - White spirit?

I really dislike White Spirit - every time I smell it it reminds me that I need to paint all the white gloss in the house!! I used Hammerite Metal Degreaser - a couple of spray bottles should do it. Wear gloves and goggles and don't spill it if you have one of those fancy painted garage floors. It washes off easily but, of course, make sure the surface is dry before applying the Hammerite.

There a lot of useful info on www.hammerite.com including a stockist locator - some websites are really very helpful. This is one of those.

I used "Hammerite black underbody seal with waxoyl", good stuff its stays flexible and doesn't chip easily.

Maybe we should try and get a PH discount?

Since the sales of Hammerite are through retailers this is probably unlikely but in view of the number of times Hammeritie is mentioned on this site I would have thought that they might feel receptive to supporting the PistonHeads brand by allocating some promotional expenditure Ted's way.

Thanks for all the tips guy's, I will check out the Hammerite web site for the final shopping list.

If I had a "As advertised on PHs" sticker it would be going on my local Halfords Hammerite stand
