Hi All,

I need some help identifying the manifold and system on my 500 please. Although it sounds amazing it is just too loud on a run and I want to reduce the droning.
It looks like it's an ACT manifold with a V band Y piece and although I know I haven't shown the rest of the system I'm certain its a sports style system with cherry bomb style silencers.
If I'm correct does this mean I have no cats int he manifold and only the cat in the Y piece? In which case I guess my first step is to try a standard system instead of the sports and see if that takes the edge off.
I know there are many threads about exhausts so once I know what I have I can listen to the various Youtube vids and work out what my options are.

Thanks
Mags

Hi. Your manifolds and 'Y' piece are standard but look as though they have been ceramic coated. The only way to see if the pre cats have been removed is to remove the clamps and 'Y' piece and look inside the manifolds. If they are there you should see a white honeycomb section. Unlikely the main cat has been removed as it won't pass a mot. Also if you do have a cherry bomb exhaust fitted I'm sure many on here would swap for a standard one. By the way nice engine bay. Have one similar.

Thanks, I didn't realise the V band connection was standard!
Yes is has been ceramic coated, the car was restored a few owners ago.
I find it hard to believe I could have both sets of cats and just a standard exhaust given how loud it is but I'll listen to a few vids and see what I can determine before I start yanking the Y piece apart. I'm sure Andy @ APM who does my servicing told me it didn't have cats.
Nice engine bay too wink

Some choose to sleeve the centre box but it sounds awful.
Photos of the main system will help to see if it is standard.
Maybe you can see some welds on the centre box if it's been modified.

Thanks both, I'll get a jack under her at the weekend to check, I thought I had two cherry bomb style silencers but will check.
Appreciate the help.

As others have said you have standard manifolds. You may be able to detect if the cats have been removed if there's a section that's been cut out and welded back. Usually hidden underneath you may be able to feel for it obviously when they're cold.

If you have no main cat then you'll hear an echo to the exhaust note.

Alternatively you may be able to check if you have cats with an infra red thermometer. The area where the cat is will be hotter than the rest of the section. If you have ceramic coating that may alter the heat showing but it should be relative to the system either side.

Hi Mags. If you decide to change the manifolds tim also supplies ARP stainless manifolds bolts. Great upgrade, no more seized bolts and a smaller spanner size for easy removal.

My Griffith has the main silencer sleeved by a previous owner. It is louder than standard of course, but I wouldn't IMHO call it awful. It quietens slightly as the engine warms up for some reason, unless it's me getting used to it. It doesn't sound any louder in the cabin than a standard one, until you put the window down. smile

The bad sytems i think are when you have a system that has also been decatted. A friend of mine bought a Chimaera 500 that had received both mods and THAT sounded awful, almost like a tractor. frown Fortunately it came with a Y piece with the cat in it for MoT time. He left it fitted.

I had to get these as my primaries are over sized and the hex tips of the standard bolts foul on the tubes. I thought of the Allen head ones but again my manifolds would have got in the way. I'd source your own nordlock washers though as the standard ones aren't high temp and a few of mine split and fell off. Pricey but the only thing I could find to do the job.

Funny you say that, the only vid I watched on my way home was Matthew Poxon's with Clives equal length manifolds and it sounded epic!
That would set me back thousands though and I'm not sure how loud that is compared with what I have already.

I have a feeling it has these already, can't check now as she's tucked away and covered up but will at the weekend, I remember being surprised at how rust free the manifold bolts were yesterday.
