Phone holder/location
Discussion
I haven't driven my Griff since I've had a smart phone (11 years!). but now I've had the car recommissioned and live in a world that didn't function without phones....
What's the best phone holder and location for a Griffith 500.
Also, sorry for not using it. Started my own business and been driving a van instead!
Thanks

Pioneer SPH-10BT will hold your smart phone and you will use all your current apps, maps etc. A@

I also recommend the Pioneer unit. The -20 has DAB which means you can even listen to a radio (additional antenna required but a small one in the footwell works for me). From memory the unit is also not quite as deep as a CD unit meaning it is not such a pain inserting it with the nest of wiring behind the dash.

How's the wiring fitting it to the TVR? Plugs compatible or conversion loom required?
Why did you ask that question...LOL..ours is in a Tamora that only had rear speakers from OE, (that the phone aspect on all car units only work through the front speakers), initially I re wired the back speaker to the fronts, THEN converted the door cars to accept front speakers to find that there was not front speaker wiring in the door loom, so I took the doors off to add the speaker wiring before re-rewiring the rear speakers. Because it was Pioneer coming out it swapped straight in. I had to buy another mic to as the lead was not log enough. For me the rewards are high as I can watch RS-ajp as and when I need it and all my music/maps work much the same as my Volvo/Citroen/Smart. (the picures of the plugs are in the Halfords link).A@
I have one of these which does a good job. I don't leave it on the dashtop while I'm not using it to prevent marking the vinyl.
I really like the position of the phone when using it for satnav It's doesn't obstruct your view but it's in your line of site for instructions.
This looks like a similar but more upmarket version

Phone holders .... :shudders:
Part of a wider upgrade when I was recommissioning mine after a similar time in storage. Wanted to get rid of any need for a seperate sat nav or seperate phone holder, whilst benefiting from Airplay (or Android version if you do).
Yes, more expensive than a bit of plastic, or versions of the theme which hold the phone, however I found all of them didn't offer what I wanted, which was to get rid of the phone out of the cabin and a reasonable level of quality music output.
Horses for courses etc.
This is a Pioneer AVH Z7200DAB run through a Focal FD4.300 amp into Morel Tempo Ultra Integra MKii's 602 fronts and 402 rear's. Airplay is hardwired, so I use a CarLinkit dongle for shorter journeys for WiFi connectivity and straight wire for longer, in the glovebox.
The unit has an onboard amp and CD player. The nice thing is the screen retracts and it's a very nice plain facia (photo taken before white label removal). I dislike immensely the busy, colourful, dancing dolphins type displays that seem popular. Going even more high end wasn't worth it, as a car is a st audio environment anyway, let alone a TVR with the roof off. However, I still wanted fantastic quality music reproduction as I use the stereo a lot - i know dozens will be along shortly to say they don't know if theirs works as the music comes from the exhausts etc etc etc ....
DAB aerial is fitted under the whale tail between seats towards the rear shelf. Microphone for calls on rear view mirror, audio through front speakers (it's a Pioneer set up thing) and screen can be hidden all the time while using SatNav as well if its straight forward enough that you don't need the visuals.
Only issue is when it's really hot (>30 degrees) then the can phone heat up in the glovebox while charging and running GPS, streaming music etc and can shut down until it cools down. Not something that is a frequent issue in the UK, but for touring it needs some further thought, nearly happened leaving LM24 this year.

I use one of these too but more to the left, no rings on the windscreen, slips on and off the dash easily and lives in glove box when not in use. Cheap as chips, does the job, Simple’s !!I really like the position of the phone when using it for satnav It's doesn't obstruct your view but it's in your line of site for instructions.

A combination of the dashboard clip and the Pioneer unit may be the solution I'm looking for, for the cars.
Useful thread. Thank you guys.
I’ve had a Pioneer SPH-20DAB (similar to SPH-10BT) for a couple of years now and agree its phone holder is excellent. It holds the phone firmly, easy to reach & can be rotated horizontally or vertically, plus it can also be angled down so you can read the screen in direct sunlight when your lid is off.Useful thread. Thank you guys.
However the app is no where near as good as Android Auto or Apple Carplay and the head unit's controls are very limited as its designed to always be controlled via the Pioneer app, for example you can't even change radio stations on the head unit. Also I find the Superbass option too bassy but without it everyone on DAB speaks with a lisp, its just not upto Pioneers usual high standards, which is ok in our noisy cockpits especially with the roof off.
I could rant on more about the Pioneer app but on a positive note I’m keeping it as an expensive phone holder & because it streams Bluetooth music ok from your favourite media app.

Good idea thanks, my FM and DAB aerials are both in the boot lid carpet and my mic is on the left side of the steering column cowling which works surprisingly well even with the roof off. Thanks for all these, loads of great ideas.
I have the big screen set up with android auto in my van and i don't really need it in the TVR. Just need the phone for GPS. I might even be able to bluetooth spotify but none of that existed when i was driving it (i installed an mp3 cd player and that's all good as it got then!)
I think the screen mount option might do for now but worried about blocking the already tiny view so I'll play with positions. Plus don't want the medallion swinging too much.
And this suggested advert in the Griff forum. How dare they!
