3rd Party Warranties

I am buying a 500 privately (97 R) with full TVRsh and all bills. Does anyone have experience of 3rd party warranties e.g. WarrantyWise etc ? The going price seems to be around £250. A colleague in the trade tells me they are not worth the paper they are written on. However, it would be reassuring to know that someone else will pick up the tab if anything major goes wrong ....
