Hi,
I need to replace the tyres on my Griff 500. It wears Toyo R1Rs at the moment but it seems that they cannot be sold in the UK (Europe?) any longer. Can anyone recommend from experience a suitable alternative? Sizes are 225/45 16s and 245/40 17s. Fast road driving, longer cruises, try (but usually fail!) to avoid wet roads.
TIA

I think the TR1s are a replacement for the R1Rs. I have these fitted at the moment but before these I had Kuhmo V70s ,amazing grip when dry but tread carefully when damp.

Thanks. Are you happy with the TR1s, are they as good as the R1Rs?

They are fine but can't comment on road noise as the roof is always in the boot. But in the dry the V70s are brilliant.

I have used Uniroyal Rainsports for some time now.
Great grip both wet and dry. They may well be available in 16/17 inch sizes.
I have them in 17 all round on my Chimaera - 215/45 17 front and 235/45 17 rear.

+1 for Rainsport 5's

I have 17"s on my Jag engined S1 (265bhp)

Road noise isn't a consideration!

It looks as though I'm going to have problems as I can't find either the T1Rs or the Uniroyals in the right sizes. I may have to consider going down a size on the rears from 245 to 235, but should I then up the profile from 40 to 45 or stick with 40?

As said above, mine is on 235/45 17s which suits perfectly.

Looking at the rolling chassis design, 215/45/16 is only 0.4% different to original. 225/45/17 or 255/40/17 are again only 0.4% different from original and 235/45/17 is only 1.6% different. All four of these sizes are available in Mich PS3 or 4. Happy motoring smile

A useful conversion tool for estimating the speed difference when changing the tyres profile:

What rim width?

8" would be ideal with a 7.5 to 9" range for most tyres.
