Accelerator pedal cable Problems
Discussion
Several posts on here have highlighted the crude arrangement where the accelerator pedal is crimped to ensure that the cable nipple does not jump out of the pedal. This seems to cause the cable to fray and fail.
I decided to have a look and see if something better could be made and was surprised to see that TVR had already cured the problem by fitting a nylon ferrule in the pedal. My car is 1996 and I know that the acc. cable has never been changed from new so maybe the later cars do not have a problem. [url]

I moved the pedal backwards ( or forwards at the top) to take the photo so as to show the arrangement. There is about 3/4" of slack in the cable but normally the pedal is weighted to lie against the nipple so there is no slack in the throttle engagement.i.e. instant throttle action.
This is easier to see than describe. The bottom line though is no frayed cable.

Does the Greif suffer snapped throttle cables because there is no pedal stop?
So all the strain from full throttle is trying to pull the crimped end off.
No. The problem is a combination of too much spring tension at the throttle butterfly and a torturous cable route creating wear and therefore friction between cable and sheathSo all the strain from full throttle is trying to pull the crimped end off.

Agreed. Having recently bought into classic motorcycles and got myself a 1978 bike it always takes me back to trail bike and motocross in my youth. Oiling cables was a really important routine job.
The fact most of these cars cables are 10 years old and some much older and subjected to extreme heat they should be maintained far better than they are.
