Hi all,

This is probably a regular topic/question that comes up, but apparently the insurance market is very fluid. The classic car insurer I have used my whole classic car ownership period cover both my MG and TVR has just put my Griff premium up from £700 to nearly £2k. Nothing in my situation has changed other than another year of claim free motoring...rug well and truly pulled!

They haven't provided any reason other than "the underwriter has decided". Its obviously their choice but I was alarmed how quickly appetite for risk can change.

Does anyone have any current recommendations for reasonably priced insurers?

Thanks in advance

Chris

Try Footman James. Depending on your individual profile they’ll likely quote you in the £150 - £300 range. They give big discount for TVR car club membership.

I agree with the recommendation for Footman James. My S2 with a modified engine is insured for agreed value £10,500 and they have just renewed for only £197.

They do require a TVR Club official valuation for agreed-value insurance, but the club (Mervyn) can do this free of charge and remotely without an inspection, if you fill in a form and provide photos and details.

I used AIB for the Chim £127 including breakdown.
They did advertise on PH.
The wife had a Freelander & i bought her a Mini Clubman.
AIB insured both the cars via LV for her with her NCB on both cars.
2 seperate policies & the price was cheaper than gocompare etc.
Worth a phone call.

I am with Lancaster. Again about 40% discount with TVRCC and pay a premium of £160 for a car parked on the drive. I need to let them know that it is now in the garage but will probably go up!

You really don’t want to pay any more than about £300 surely! From memory my 5.5 with classic was about £350.

I have four or five cars insured through Admiral multicar. All the prices including my daughters Porsche are extremely reasonable. I added a RAV4 earlier this year. Every car addEd, it reduces the premium on the others. The long and the short of it is they added the Toyota and gave me back £13.40 for the privilege! How often do you hear an insurance story like that.

Chris, you are being ripped off.........unless you are 22, have 15 points on your licence, crashed the last three cars and park it on the street overnight in Brixton.

I too am an accountant, we are not known to be a high risk profession.
My very modified Chimaera 450 turbo, parked overnight on the drive, £20,000 agreed value, was £320 this year with Footman James.
Do join the TVRCC - you will get more than the subscription back off your insurance premium.

Amazing advice guys, thank you all very much for your contribution.

Part of the problem is I insist on using the car for everything, all the time, including driving to clients which means I need "business use" cover.

Lancaster happy to bring the quote inline with previous if i remove business use (it was previously covered) but FJ have come in at £250 inc commuting so think ill switch the business use to the volvo and stick to commuting in the TVR.

Moving to Norfolk shortly so that should hopefully bring it down a bit further too!

Thanks again all

There are some advantages to getting old.... smile

Glad you’re sorted OP.

For the record or anyone reading this thread in future, our Griff is insured with A-plan and has been for many years, along with one of our daily cars also now. I have always found them pleasant to deal with, flexible in terms of classic policies and what you can add on to them, and prices similar to the cheaper end of the usual internet price comparison thingies.

I may be a bit late to the party but another +1 for Footman James.
I have my Griffith insured with them for just under £260 - agreed value, 5k miles a year, including commuting (single place of work).
