Although my pre-cat Griffith sounds just great I would like it to pop and bang a bit more, is there a driving technique to achieve this? Or, any suggestions for a louder exhaust.

As you change down through the gears blip the throttle a bit, this will shove extra fuel into the system which will burn in the exhaust.

Works for me..

D.

PS I expect it does something terrible to you linings so try not to do it constantly.

PPS It's a good way of destroying any fuel economy

With a pre-cat (I have a 4.3) try a Zertec sports exhaust. It looks the biz with 4 tail pipes And is oh so loud, with plenty of pops, bangs & flames too. It is stainless throughout so will never need replacing, and about £500 if I remember rightly.

To illustrate the effect, I can quote a bloke in a car park last sunday... " Fu********ing hell!!!" and I was not showing off, honest, just leaving a car park in an orderly manner.

Doesn't it lose you power, though?

I've meant to answer this for ages.

The one that was on Steve's car was an early one (the 2nd in fact) without the =length manifolds. We then took a car with the full system to Arvin Exhausts in Preston for about 2 weeks testing. The result of fiddling with back pressure was more torque and slightly more power.

Oh yes, the testers had wonderfull fun on their test track blowing away everything including some prototype supercharged Jags.

On mine, it's best if you're going down hill in a lowish gear. Accelerate to about 3000rpm then take your foot completely off the gas. Leave for a couple of seconds as the engine braking takes effect and then gently press the accelerator again.

Obviously snapping off the throttle and using engine braking down hill is a risky manuvoure so best not tried in the wet and anywhere near a corner.

Also watch out for old people as the popping and banging can have them diving for cover and brandishing service revolvers.

It's not entirely healthy for the catalytic converters either although you probably don't worry about that much with a 4.x

I get best results by coming completely off the throttle and then just resting my foot back on the peddle = blubble blubble pop blubble, lovely but must be nackering the cats.

i've found that the louder you want the bangs and pops the more gentle feathering you have to do... so if you rev to 4000rpm then ever so gently release the throttle they sound louder and last for longer... on a nice straight road from 5000 to 3000 i can get about 15-20 seconds of them (oh i'm such a child :P )

as for damaging the cats, well it (Chimaera 4.0) passed the MOT with no faults at all a couple of days ago
