I have a '99 Griffith 500 - which entertains me enormously. I have had very few niggles with it so far but for those i have had, i have found this site very helpful.

I have one slight issue for which i have searched previous threads but can not find an answer:
When i get back in the car, having filled up with fuel, there's often a very strong smell of petrol fumes. Once i drive off with the windows open (& fag in mouth! ) the fumes clear and don't return until the next refill.

Has anyone had this problem and if so, how did they solve it?

Cheers, Will

The fumes can be caused by excess fuel (don't squeeze that last drop in) going into the purge cannister which then gets flushed out during the first few minutes of motoring. Cure is either don't drive the car or don't fill it to the brim.

Thanks for the suggestion - i shall try it out next time i fill up.

J, do you have the problem with Optimax pumps not filling smoothly, on mine they cut out all the time? I have to fill mine up one drip at a time! I guess the nozzle is the wrong shape or something - but its painful none the less!

mine always does that regardless of how much fuel I put in. I like to think of it as a 'quirk'

Nope you've just converted the purge cannistor into your reserve fuel tank or the biggest car bomb to come out of Blackpool....

Remove purge cannister and see if there is any fuel in it. Removing is a bar steward category job as it is located in the front wing. Detailed in the bible and one of those jobs I never ever want to do again! Renew or clean out as necessary.

what the bloody hell is it doing in the front wing? I think there is just a little fuel escaping into the car from the filler nozzle, it will end up in the drainage point below the tank, but until it has evaporated ther are some vapours getting into the booy and thus into the cabin...not a problem, I just wait to have a fag.

'what the bloody hell is it doing in the front wing?'

Sums up TVRs perfectly! Doubtless it's also held in place by an indestructible GRP panel, 24 self-tappers with chewed slots and 8 tons of gooey black mastic...

Not far off it except that some of the self tappers are self tappers with washers welded to them so they can be turned as there is not enough space to get to them...
