Griffith dashboard
Discussion
Help appreciated - who? where? and how much? for a standard replacement Griffith dashboard? Preference would be for a walnut veneer version but all options considered - how long is a new wooden dash likely to last before it starts cracking etc, would it be more sensible to go for a brushed ally dash for example?
Thanks in advance!!!

its about £2-300 for a new one I think, the older they get the more fragile they become it would seem and they dont repair well in the event of cracking.I had the same thoughts about replacing with an aluminiun one(they look fab) but the light reflection was more than the original wood one so I used some carpet instead until I can find some matching leather to replace it with, sounds a bit max-power but the early Griffs had the worst "plastic" looking wood which didnt match anything else in the car and in my oppinion had to go!
I also looked at a few local antique restoration companys who work with alot of veneers and its quite a bit cheaper if you get a price off them for replacing the "wood".
anyway good luck with it,

With the enthusiasm that PH'ers have for ripping out wood and fitting aluminium, there must be some unwanted walnut dashes lying around. The lifetime of a walnut dash depends on how much sun it gets, which can lighten and craze it. Even wood dashes have a metal backing, so if you're good at woodwork and finishing you can get a nice bit of veneer and make you own. Art Veneers in Mildenhall sell every kind of veneer you can think of, plus many more.
At least two of us still prefer nice walnut to bits of old escalator casing!

My Griffs got an aluminium dash, I beleive it was supplied with the car when it was new. Rather than brushed aluminium it has a textured surface, a kind of horizintal wavy pattern cut about 1-2mm into the metal. I have no problems with reflected light and scratches/dents don't tend to show on it.
Had wood in my 350i, they always crack up sooner or later, especially if you need the dash out to get behind it. I'd go for the aluminium every time now.
Maybe the factory can still get you an aluminium one but no doubt they'll charge the earth.

Very possibly, so was mine - it was a £350 option!

Ditto again. I think it's called 'woven'. My car is silver so I can live with it as it matches the bodywork, but apart from that I don't care for it. Should be on some steps somewhere (IMHO) but everyone else seems to like it (sigh)

I know they arent veneer but then its another option.
I beleive Wedge Automotive used to be able to get the dash RE-veneered for about £90 but not sure wether they still can, they are in the oily pages.

Dave Battey at The Garage Gildford can offer a supply or supply and fit for re-veneered wooden dashes. He is also looking at Carbon Fibre versions. He is a highly recommended independent TVR workshop so knows what he is doing. Tel: 01483-811995
David fitted my Carbon Dash May 2001 it looks pretty good I think and he did a good job too.
