Mine does it all the time. I understood the speedo and rev counter are driven by a stepper motor and basically freeze when you turn the ignition off. Maybe different types work differently though?

My S3 is the same (same gauges I think). Just turn the ignition back on for a second without starting the engine, and both speedo and rev counter will return to zero.
