Toyo Proxes T1-S - Anyone tried ???
Discussion
Whilst posting I thought I'd try Ted's new Tyre quoting service and one thing that came up interestingly was the following....
205/55/15VR TOYO PROXES T1-S £61.50
Now that's a reasonable price for tyres (probably could be beaten) but got me thinking and as I will need to change the fronts quite shortly I was wondering after all the good write up's these have had from EVO and some of the guys with Griffith's etc if anybody has tried them in this size for a S series.
There was one S at Zolder on them but I never found him to ask what he thought.
I am very happy with the Bridgestone RE720's but fancy seeing what these are like...any opinions gratefully received as ever.
Cheers

I had them on my shortlist when I was looking for new boots for my S3. Didn't go for them in the end. I tried to read as many tests as I could find on the internet and the german equivalent to AA and RAC (ADAC) has tested a fair number of tyres.
As you know, the Toyos are only available as 205/55 and the S was originally equipped with 205/60. After much thought I decided to stick to the original dimension so that I would not compromise the ground clearance any further. Some people also claim that the wheelarches look too "empty" on /55 tyres.
So, in the end I opted for a set of Continental Premium Contacts. So far (250 miles) I am very happy. They scored well in all the tests I could find. The steering is light and precise, grip in the dry is good. Haven't used them in the wet yet. The tread pattern may not be to eveyone's liking. It's an asymmetrical design, but I think it's guite good.
Maybe an alternative if you would like to stick to the original dimensions..... Check out

Doesn't matter. Speed ratings also effect the way the tyre copes with acceleration as well. If you tell me you don't welly it, you're a liar!
Basically you need to provide as good or better manufacturer spec spares. That means you can fit ZR rated tyres to a VR shod car but not the other way round.
Really nice way of invalidating your insurance in a claim BTW.

The problem for us big boys is that Toyo do not make a 15 inch that is ZR rated so they are a not starter from a legality point of view.
OK for a V6 but not for a V8.

Yes but - the Z rating is also tied to other aspects of the cars performance such as acceleration. The cars original rating is also going to looked at if you make a claim. Your call, but is a different tyre rating worth the risk?

JSG.
But we can't legally go over 70 mph !!!!
