I've just finished making my carbon dash, and fitted it yesterday. It was a pig to put back in, but am well pleased with the results.
I also removed the heater control panel, ready to make up a carbon replacement, but unfortunatly made a complete balls up of taking it out!
After finally removing it though, I can now see how it SHOULD have been removed. Firstly, ease out the 2 window switches, then feel through the holes and undo the 2 nuts which hold the panel down. The panel should now pull out! Simple!!!
The panel lifts out with a circuit board underneath it, which is connected to the heater pots. I didn't realise that the circuit board came out with the pots, so I tried pushing them through the panel. The result is a circuit board with several ripped out tracks and 3 pots with broken connecter pins!
I should be able to repair it, hopefully, as I think a new panel is about 250 clams!! So be carefull!!

I'll post some pictures if I can source a digital camera!
As you say, it is pretty much identical to yours, only with white dials instead of your yellow!
The switch panel does have a metal backing, just like the dash. You will have to be carefull in removing the LED's as they are glued into the back of the panel and soldered onto the circuit board!
Let me know how you get on with yours. Hope you have more luck than me!
