Black Griffith 500 with Compomotive wheels
Discussion
Thank you very much, I am just about to order my black Compomotive 5 spokes and am trying to decide on the offset for the rear wheels.
The griffith @ Le Man had 17 x 8 rear wheels with ET35 and 245/40 x 17 tyres fitted.
My car is a pre-cat and is fitted with 16 x 7.5 standard rear wheels ET33 with 245/45 x 16 tyres but the near side rear tyre catches the arch when carring a passenger especially with a full boot.
I have Nitrons fitted and am running the rear suspension 5mm higher than std.
I have been told that N/S/R arch touching is common with 245 tyres fitted, hence my interest in the Griffith in I saw in France.
I will probably go for a rear ET40 and fit 235/40 x 17 Toyo R888 tyres.
Do you know the tyre width and ET/offset of the car in the photo, is it your car?
Many thanks!

Thank you for the tyre sizes, and the photo of the racing Griff!
That helps with my rear tyre width decision I think I will go with 235/40 x 17.
I am aware that some owners have ground the inner arch away and sealed with sikaflex or similar but I was hoping to avoid body mods if possible.
Have either of you had any issues with the inside of the front wheel touching the wishbone on full lock?
Apparently TVR did a wheel and brake upgrade for the Griff and included rack stops (nylon washers) to counter this problem.
Many thanks again!!!

I think the ride height has been dropped by 30mm but thats off the top of my head so could well out!
I think the key is the 7" front and 7.5" rear width's.
You have helped me decide not to go to wide, the arch contact at the rear and wishbone contact at the front seems to happen with wheels 1/2" wider than standard fitment plus 245's on the rear, so I shall go with 235's on the rear.
Many thanks again, again!!!

Just recently fitted Compomotive MO6 18x9(265/35 tyres) to the rear and 17x7(215/40 tyres) to mine with no clearance issues at all on std suspension. The key is in keeping the offset correct- et25 front and either et35 or 40 rear depending on what width(et40 with 9" rims and 265 tyres).
I also did this on my last griff(2000 year car) but that had lowered suspension and a very slight rub was present on the one rear arch on occasions which would have been pretty easy to remove. I think it will make a difference which body mould yours is from as they do vary a bit as I have found out.
I'm about to fit Nitrons again to mine and might well lower it a tad when I do,but I'm not expecting any clearance issues this time as they look a better fit on the earlier body mould already.I'll be interested to see how it goes.

Wow! I had no idea that width of rear wheel and tyre was possible.
Your point about the body mouldings makes a lot of sense
I saw in Steve Heaths book that a 245/45 x 16 rear tyre on a 7.5" rim that my car is running was a factory option for 500's, although he doesnt specify the ET mine is 33.
I have discussed with compomotive going for a ET of 40 or even 45 so your figures are great to hear.
Thanks very much, I think I shall think it through again....

Which ever size you go for I would try and keep the track width as wide as possible,ie I would prefer to dress out the very little material required from the inner edge of the outer lip of the rear arch than lose another 5mm of track width(10mm total) if that makes sense? You would have to have an et of 40 if you want rears of 265 on there but et45 might just foul the wishbone depending on the brand of tyre,as brands do vary even though they are all called '265mm' for example.Your point about the body mouldings makes a lot of sense

By the same token you could squeek 255's on an et of 35 if your prepred to dress the arch out a tad, just like the 265's on et40.
lots to think about My hardest choice was finding wheels I liked and in the right sizes in the first place!By the way the 17" fronts on mine are 7" wide and Compomotive dont do an et25 in this wheel(mo6) so I chose an et23 rather than et27 which was their only options and it fits fine with the 215 profile tyres.
Yes good point about the track, my 245/45 x 16 on an ET33 are catching on the N/S/R outer edge.
I had been thinking of going to an 8" wheel width but that then adds 6mm more each side of the centre line and increases the back space significantly, however knowing what you have achieved helps my bravery.
As best as I can calculate an ET38 on a 7.5" width would tuck the tyre in 5mm which would end the arch contact, I was also trying to factor in either Toyo R888 or more sensibly R1R's which I have been told sit wider due to there stronger structure.
I think as much as I try to theorise I wont know till I bolt a choice on and see what happens, I think your point abpout mould variations will be the reason for contact on my car, it is one of the first Griff's.
I am also trying to decide bettween 17" rears with 16" fronts v's 16's all round or even 17's both ends, at least with a TVR you get plenty of options....
Perhaps a wheel wardrobe is the answer. Thanks very much for your advice!!!

Which particular version of the M06 did you get for front and rear. Am concerned with the different offsets that the wheels look slightly different, if you get what I mean....
SSPPGG- I'll get some pics for you either tomorrow night or Wednesday latest as I dont have the car at the moment but am picking it up tomorrow night. There are others on here who have also fitted them so it might be worth a search also.
g8ape- The offsets arent what determines the slightly different appearance of the fronts compared to the rear as It's really down to size difference in the case of the Mo6.The 17" wheels all look the same regardless of wheather they are 7 or 8 inches wide whereas the 18's differ slightly with width depending on wheather they are 8,9 or 10" wide. Although you cant quite get an exact appearance match(often the case with many wheels of differing size, just like the estorils and oz's) I really wanted to maintain the 1" diameter difference and also get the biggest wheel possible on the rear as I wanted to set the rake properly without making wheel arch space look odd and also wanted the lowest profile tyres possible at the highest speed rating.

The 5 spoke design as fitted to the red Griff were my 1st choice especially if 16" all round had been available but Compomotive have discontinued that style so it will have to be a M01783 or similar now.
I do realise that front face of the wheel wont alter due to width variation.
A further consideration has been my wish to fit Toyo R1R's unfortunately they have a small range of size options I would have liked to have fitted a 215 for the front tyre but the options in 16" are 205 or 225, I know its not disasterous but I just cant quite get to happy place with wheel style & size plus tyres choice. Im fast approaching having a set for road use and a set for the track.
Perhaps Im thinking to small and should follow your lead.
