Cutting out / Stalling

just recently my '92 Griff has taken to cutting out every now and again. it usually only happens when i slow down from a reasonable speed as i approach a roundabout or t-junction. when i am in neutral the rev counter gradually drifts below 1000 rpm and the car stalls. it usually starts ok, or i bump start it by knocking it into 2nd gear if i see the revs fall away. i have checked for loose connections on all the plugs, disrtibutor cap, leads etc and the car is not overheating (so i don't think it is vaporising fuel). anybody got any ideas. i had a hunt through the search section and it it seems a few people might have suffered similar problems.
Yup - Mine did that, seems to run a whole heap better using Optimax - even improved the grumpy when cold thing..
..though i'm still looking for somewhere else that does the high octane stuff.

Have you checked ECU connections for corrosion? I had a problem some while back which might be similar. Too rich a mixture from a sensor being misread. OK so the 500s cut out if the mixture's too rich (to protect the cats) and it might not be exactly the same......
I had a similar problem with my SEAC, started out as a misfire then stopping completely. Turned out that when I had had the clutch replaced, the two nuts holding the ECU earthing cables to the engine were only done finger tight. They slowly got loose with the vibration. You should find them between the bulkhead and the nearside of the engine.
Not unlikely to be stepper motor related, may just require the valve to be cleaned.
How tight is your petrol cap! If you get a sharp intake of air when you release it then there's too good a seal - The cap should allow enough air through to prevent a vaccuum developing in the tank, try loosening it!

thanks for all your replies. i have cleaned the stepper motor - made no difference, although it was pretty filthy and i am reluctant to splah out on a new one just yet. disconnected the battery for 10 mins to allow the ecu to reset itself (not sure if that really works!)- no difference. am going to try and clean all the earth points over the w/end and if no joy then its off to the local tvr dealership.
