My Griffith 500 runs beautifully. She has done 48K miles and all seems well. However, the gear changes are a bit notchy/sticky - its almost like tow moves changing gear. Has anyone experienced something like this on their cars or does anyone have any advice?

Is the gearbox oil level OK?

Is the cluch dragging?

Al,

TVR gear boxes all tends to be pretty clunky and stiff. I for one was rather surprised at the begining. However, with a bit of practice it becomes second nature.
Of course you could have driven the first 48k miles clocked on this cars, in which you can fairly tell me to shut up!

Have driven a few Griffs/Chims with higher mileage than my own (only 14k) and they all seem far 'lighter' to shift.

My own has just started to stick when changing up from 2nd to 3rd - no idea why.

Had a similar problem with my Chimaera 4 if by notchy / sticky you mean that it seems to need a real heave to disengage from the gear you're in. It then engages in the next gear quite easily but does feel like a two part operation. There was a big improvement when the gearbox oil was changed shortly after during the 12,000 mile service.

You say you have just had a full service, did that include a gearbox oil change?

I'll check and let you know although I dont think it did. However - I think gear box oil is due at 54,000 miles - the sticky gear is 3rd. Has anyone had a gear box rebuilt (ouch!?) surely it can't be that already....?? Thanks all you guys who have contributed so far.

Mine sticks a little in 3rd. I thought it could be as my master cylinder is leaking cylinder and possibly a bit of air was in the system. I have topped oil up. I am going to fit new seals soon so hopefully it may cure it.

I've always found the T5 box in my 97 500 (16,000 miles) is notchy, and can baulk at high revs between 2nd and 3rd if not careful. (Like at Duxford, when the 4.x's go past )

Others have reported the same problem. Just seems to be one of those things. By contrast the much-maligned Rover box in my 4.0 was always sweet.
