Mine runs at about 85-92 normaly, when it cools check the swirl tank and the filler tank to see if you have lost any water (as the swirl tank could be down on water but the filler may not show it).
The thermostats can be a bit funny looking at my cars history it has had a few .. but the steaming sugests something is coming out somewhere

Check your levels then if it looks ok take it to a dealer (or specialist ) and get the system checked out. It could just be an airlock.
Mine did this last year although not to the same extreme as yours, it would read cold then hot then cold then hot as I drove a very short distance, my radiator had sprung a leak, about £200 for a recore.
Good luck.

Plan of attack (not in order) -
i. Check fans: motors, electrical connections?
ii. Obstruction of radiator?
iii. Minor leaks - hose clips, rad cap, rad?
iv. Crap in rad core, cyl block?
v. Knackered water pump/drive belt slipping? (There were some minor squeals..)
vi. Stuck thermostat?
vii. Low coolant levels? (yup!)
viii. Air locks in system?
Coolant level well low, decided best approach would be to flush, replace coolant, bleed and go for spin, returned let cool half hour took pressure cap off and left overnight - topped up this morning.
Thought that had been 'sorted' by the dealer..
Still, at least I know what's in there now!!
Anyone know where I can get a bottle of WaterWetter? Threshers doesn't do it...
