OOh, I have one of them, picked up on ebay for a song. fsh is a good start as is a call to the last service entre to check if there were any major problems. make sure the cambelts have been done at the right times, make sure the cats are happy as they are expensive, don't touch it if there is anything wrong with the quattro system or the central locking and if it is an auto without the sport settings it can hunt about alot when it is worn.

they are massively complex, so anything other than a minter is worth avoiding. that said don't be scared of miles, the V6 is as tough as old boots.

If the engine's tough, I can say the rest of the car is, we've got a '93 A6 (same car) with 273,000 mls.

Solid, not a lie when I say it feels like 100,000.

Mechanically it was fine. Trouble was it would take about £1500 to get it to a standard level with the car i've already got.
Thanks for the input.

That's the thing. I'd rather get something to tide me over and then get a good S4/6 than get a bad one now.
Though i did miss an S4 avant for £2200 by about 10 minutes this week, took a deposit just before i called about it.
June 22nd is the point at which i have to put another year's insurance/tax/mot into the renault.

What's your budget? I see Dean has a nice looking one at www.allaudi.co.uk.

If it's the N reg A6, then the answer is "not that much"!!!

I've had some rather large 'life choices' to make recently that's kinda put a new car on the back burner for a while until i get myself sorted out. I'm sure i'll be just as keen and just as confused as to what i want in due course.

Having said all that, if i can find something decent for about £2500 before i have to renew everything on the renault in the middle of next month i'll buy it. Age not important, prefer a 100 for fancy diff locks and switchable abs.
205 GTis still keep popping into my head for some reason too. Now that WOULD be a silly idea!

You must be looking at some v. old 100s then - the C4s I've owned haven't had any hing other than the locking rear diff (because of TorSen but you knew that anyway), and neither of them have had switched ABS.

The '93 one i saw the other week had switched abs and the locking diff jobby that your S4 has between the seats. I assumed that locked teh centre and rear but if it's just the rear then it's not such a big deal. From what i've found out, no A6 has the ability to manually lock anyhitng. Does it acutally make any difference with it locked (asked by someone who's fed up with getting stuck in muddy carparks at motor-racing).

I'll keep idly browsing autotrader but i'm probably going to start seriously looking around september time when i've got a bit more cash together and know what's going on.

My cars were/are both MY'94 so maybe they deleted the ABS "aus" switch end '93. It is just the rear locking diff(the centre diff is the TorSen). I've only ever needed to lock when hauling a car trailer out of up-to-the-axles mud, in the 2.8, and when seeing how fast I could accelerate on sheet ice in the S4. Otherwise of limited value. In the A6 series a traction control system that measures relative wheel slip is supposed to substitute, hence no switch. Apparently it's not as good in deep snow when it gets fooled.
