I'm looking for a cheap, reliable runabout and am considering a Scirocco that I've seen locally to me.

Am I right in thinking the GT2 is a Golf GTi with a different body?

Anyone know anything about these and are they ok?

The MK 2 Scirocco is a MK1 golf in a slightly unflattering dress. They came in carbed or injection flavours (GTIIs were carbed), the injection cars are worth getting (GTI, GTX, late model Scala and STORM) the carbed versions less so. Apart from the usual stuff, check the body work and chassis for rot, especially the sills where the rear suspension arm attaches, and that the throttle cable has a patch where it passes through the fire wall. Also be prepared for terrible brakes, VW never relocated the Servo/master cylinder so there is a cross member that saps feel and efficiency. I love my mk 1, dodgy brakes and all, but have mixed feelings about its plainer replacement.

Well I bought it.

Cracking little car for not a lot of cash. Brakes are naff, but this one very straight with FVWSH and owned by a VW mechanic.

I like the look of it too, at least it's a little different to the thousands of Golfs you see around.
