Retro fitting Central locking to a Mk4 Golf

Is it much of a job to fit central locking to a 2001 Golf 1.4 16v? Any idea of cost?

Some alarms come with a kit to convert the car to central locking. That will also make it remote central locking.
Try giving your local car stereo/alarm shop a call, they should be able to tell you which model alarm will work.
