Just bought a 1997 A6 - please help!
Discussion
Hi everyone,
I have a dilema which I am hoping that you may be able to help me with.
Basically I have just paid a deposit on a 1997 P Reg A6 1.8. Three things occured to me when I was inspecting the vehicle
1) When turning the ignition partially on, two warning lights were flashing (the ones directly above the computer display on the dash - I think they were yellow and white). These went out when the ignition was fully on.
2) The computer display didn't come on at all.
3) When opening the door locks, only that door unlocked. The garage said you need to turn it round to a second stage to open all doors???
I mentioned these to the garage on the phone later, but I have got a feeling they may try and fob me off. Particularly as the car doesn't have an owner manual and they may try and claim that these features (ie computer display) didn't come with the car. Can anyone please confirm - should the car have a computer display which comes on automatically or does it need to be turned on somewhere else. Does the fact it didn't come on sound like a major fault.?
Also, does anyone know what the two warning lights are above the display and should they flash on and off before full ignition? Finally, does it sound like the central locking is broken?
I have tried to find the info myself on the web but to no avail, I want proof of a problem to force the garage to fix any problems before I pick the car up and pay the balance on Monday.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Chris

The car is the squarer shaped version before the latest one, it was produced between 1994-1997 I think and was developed from the Audi 100. I wonder if maybe it didn't have a computer on the basic model, the only thing is that it has the screen (it is just blank), and a friends older A4 had the computer.
If it has the computer the blank screen will have three white indications along the top and three along the bottom (things like mpg, journey time and the like) and a little rocker switch on the end of the wiper wand and a reset switch about an inch down. If you don't have these things you've no comp. If it's a base A6 I wouldn't expect one - even quite high spec A6s came without. HTH
