Hi all,

Question - over the past 6 months or so I've begun to notice a small problem that I think is getting progressively worse.

Perhaps 5% of the time, the car doesn't want to go into 1st gear. If I release the clutch, press it in again it generally goes in just fine on the second time.

The car in question is a '97 Audi A-6 quattro, 2.8 liter petrol... Could this be the first gear synchro starting to pack it in? I notice that it tends to go in easier if I am still rolling a little when I try to put it in first. Any ideas what may be happening?

TIA

Any difference when hot or cold? Maybe an oil change will sure it? Otherwise it could be the clutch.

My 1.8T (probably a different 'box) is a bit stiff when going into first sometimes which I think is the clutch not behaving 100%, nothing I'm going to do anything about until it fails though (which will probably be years).

Edited to say: Thats one fantastic car you have there! (The Pantera, not the A6 )

1st won't have any synchros, but I would refresh the transaxle oil with Redline 75-90 if you can find it (burtons or DT maybe).
I'd check for uncharacteristic slop where the linkage meets the trans and look for pieces of ali or plastic bush material lying about on the trans case.
How's the mileage on the clutch?

Probably the clutch cable getting a bit stretchy. Does giving the throttle a blip make it any easier to select?

New clutch - perhaps 5,000 miles ago. I recently changed the engine oil - perhaps I need to check and see when the transmission oil was last changed.

I haven't noticed any direct relation to whether the engine is warm or not... Since it isn't every time it is a little difficult to determine exactly under what conditions the problem occurs... but it doesn't appear to be temperature related. I'll try to pay a little more attention to engine temperature and see if there is any relationship.

I'll try that... I've been looking for solutions to help it into first - I don't want to force it. I'll try the throttle blip and we'll see what happens.

That's my baby... I could tell you exactly when I changed the transmission oil in that one (two weeks ago)... I could also tell you exactly when I last changed the engine oil, when I last set valve lash, when I last cleaned the air filter, etc etc etc. The Audi I'd have to check for receipts ;-)
