Our kid picked up a 1985, gen semi restored 90k miler the other week. Running lovely. But what's with the slight knocking feel through the steering wheel when stationary, turning slightly either way, preparing to turn and move off? And I've tried a 1972 P6 Rover v8 and it's as smoothe as an A8 so it ain't tyre scrub.
Tie rod ends have been replaced in last 10k miles.

Any clues?

I'd start by checking the belt on the power steering pump.
