I'm considering buying a Mk2 Scirocco GTi/GTX for a cheap runabout. Has anyone got any experience of these or know of what to look out for?

rusty fuel filler necks... water gets into the injection system and screws it up, suspension top mounts wear out with regularity but cheap to replace.
Make sure the clutch is good as its a pain of a job to replace. GTX's have hydraulic tappets.

Fast & economical (33mpg+) even when driven hard, if you pick a good one up for pocket money your laughing

Other than that hard as nails, had many a happy mile knocking seven bells out my 1.8i Storm some years ago(if you come across a nice one of those rip his arm off) Full leather, factory body kit etc

Often slagged off but I rate them,

Comparing a GT Scirocco with a GTX is like comparing a CL Golf with a GTi

got to be Injection

mustard I have to disagree. I run a MK2 Golf GTi as my daily driver and I was VERY surprised by the handling and power delivery of the Scirocco. Now either my GTi is knackered (I don't think so!) or the Scirocco is a very nice little car......

1.6 GT - 75bhp
1.8 GT - 90bhp
1.8 Injection - 112bhp

Plus uprated rollbars etc, not saying a GT is a bad car (I like 'em ) but if you can find a good one, you can pick an Injection up for buttons, great fun and as tough as old boots (carb ones are fitted with the dreaded pierburg carb. which can give lots of grief)

The Scirocco, being based on a Mk 1 chassis is a fair bit lighter than your mk 2, hence the power diference between the carbed and injection motor will be offset.
