On Tuesday evening driving home, I thought I could make out a whistling noise, but decided I must be going mad. Last night again I heard the same whistling most of the way home, but about 3 miles from home it turned into a grumbling noise (best way I can describe it, is it sounds like a Landrover with off road tyres on). There was a slight vibration through the floor, but none through the steering wheel. I thought it was probably the rear wheel bearings drying out, so spent 2 hours last night taking both sides apart, cleaning the bearings (no visible wear or scorching), re-greasing & putting back together.

And the difference ? None at all ! The noise is still there & having driven 65miles this morning, it still sounds like a Landrover ! The noise is speed related, but not drive (i.e. stick it in neutral & cost & that the best way of hearing it). I was thinking it might be the front bearings, but then surely I'd get some vibration through the wheel (like I can feel through the floor). Thought it might be the exhaust rubbing, but again, it's not rev related, it's speed.....

Anyone got any ideas what it could be ?

A kerbed alloy? Broken sway bar rubbing on driveshaft?

I completely forgot I posted this on here !

This is still going on, but having now regreased the rear wheel bearings, replaced the off-side drive shaft (which was moving about an inch in/out of diff !) - are still trying to pin point the proglem.

My mechanic took the car out yesterday & said its making the same noise a diff makes when it's shot on a Mk1, except it's doing it all the time (and doesn't change if you accelerate or coast), so it's not the diff. He suspects a wheel bearing (possibly front), but as the noise is there all the time, he can't work out which one it is. He has said short of replacing all the bearings, just carry on driving it till it gets even worse, then hopefully it'll be easier to tell which corner/s are making the noise..... Not very technical, be he has assured me it's not dangerous, but will just get VERY NOISY....

Well, if I drive at over 75, the exhaust (2.5" racing Jetex) makes enbough noise to drown out the wheel bearing !

I've got a similar noise on mine, kind of a grumbling thing. Replaced rear left wheel bearing as that was where the noise was coming from, but it still happens.
Mine only sounds when I take a hard right though.

No stereo to turn up to drown it out!

Yep - sounds like the same problem....

I was thinking about replacing both rear bearings (on both sides) as they aren't that expensive anyway & it means they are then definately ruled out.

I have a spare rear wheel bearing kit for a Mk II if anyone's interested - one gave up so I got two kits thinking the second wouldn't be far behind and it outlived (my ownership of) the car.

p.s. also got a towbar in the classifeds!

Olly,

Wheel bearings (particularly fronts) change noise when you corner. If your front left hand bearing is worn, it will get noisier going around right hand corners, and vice versa.

You can also tell by the amount of play in the wheel. It is noticable.

And it IS a dangerous fault. It would fail an MOT on it, and if you do it too much, the wheel falls off. I have seen it happen .....

And it is also a slightly difficult job to replace on a Mk1 or 2 golf.

Thanks for the reply

I forgot to post that I got this resolved/fixed on Tuesday.....

Turned out to be a front left (passenger side) wheel bearing. The wheel was moving ever so slightly, but not enough to fail an MOT (apparantly). We (well, I got the garage to) replaced it anyway, and HEY PRESTO, no more NOISY grumbling !

Although now thats fixed, I'm sure I can hear the outer CV joint making a very slight noise under hard cornering - DAMN
