Advice needed please!
My father has a 2000 Audi A6 estate with 2.4 V6 engine which appears to be consuming oil at an alarming rate - about 1 litre per 1,000 miles. Vehicle mileage is 30k. He is using Castrol SLX OW30 Long Life oil in accordance with dealer instructions and the Variable Interval Service Schedule.
Is this a commom problem with this engine (I've heard rumours of this)? Is 0W30 oil just too damn thin when cold? Would switching to 5W30 or 10W30 oil solve the problem?
He is considering having the engine taken to bits to investigate the posibillity of worn piston rings, valve guides, etc. but would obviously like to avoid this. The dealer has not been over-helpful but enjoys selling him the oil at £12(!) per litre.
Any advice/experiences would be gratefully recieved.

On something like a TVR I'd say use a thicker oil. However, Audis shouldn't use it like that with any oil. Unfortunately our stable consists of 1.8T Audis - the TT uses about 1 litre every 4,000 miles (and doesn't get thrashed like it should be), my A6 uses none (102k and counting.

I suggest talking to some of the guys on the audiworld forum (do a search - the URL is quite logical, but I can't remember it now). Also, you might get help on the tt forum (www.tt-forum.co.uk - forum - other cars section).

Also speak with Audi customer service in Milton Keynes - many Audi stealers need lessons in how to treat customers.

Thanks Trefor, I'll have a look at those forums you mentioned.
