Hi I have a '95 mk3 Golf VR6 automatic and its just developed a problem where the engine gets a near total loss of power, sounds like its firing on 3 cylinders and you get an eggy smell from the exhaust. It'll do it for a couple of minutes then will start running fine again. Seems to make no difference if the engine is hot or cold as it will start happening at any time (normally just as your accelerating).

It also has a problem starting. It fires up normally then as the revs drop back down to tick over it just cuts out. Doesn't do it all the time but it'll take 4-5 goes to get it started sometimes?

If anyone has any advice as to what hese problems might be and how much it would cost to get sorted would be much appreciated. I'm putting the car up for sale soon as I'm moving abroad so I'd like to get it sorted befor we pass it on to anyone else

TIA

Check the basic electricals on the ignition side. Not au fait with VR6 electrics but sounds like the liekly cause.
