Volkswagen Concept-T

Naff attention grabbing concept or Baja racer in the making?

Volkswagen engineers have been working on another 'crossover' vehicle which normally spells tedium and despair in this office.

Their blurb says the Concept T is a "Crossover vehicle blending a high-capability off-roader and an equally uncompromising sports car ". That sounds quite a compromise to us, unless they beef up the power and turn it into the proper Baja style racer that the styling hints at.

It's powered by a 240bhp V6 and comes with four wheel drive. Performance is perky rather than porky, hitting 60mph in 6.9 seconds and it will go on to 144mph.

The bodywork is pretty different. The wing doors are a highlight. When opening, they simultaneously swing outwards slightly and move upwards steeply. This makes entry and exit that bit easier as well as minimising the space required by the car when parked up.

The two halves of the roof at the front (T-bar roof) can be removed. The rear roof module is constructed as a hardtop with integrated boot lid, but can be removed as well to reveal more sky.

Will this remain another designer's wet dream or will VW have the balls to drop the W12 in there and turn it into a proper sporting car?

Dear carmanufacturers:
Please stop making that stuff!
Such cars are overweighted monsters, and no matter how much power they have, it will never ever be proper sportscars.

Didn't Peugeot make something like this?

They did and you just reminded me that there was a real cool video of it hooning through the desert.

It was shown on Top Gear I think, anyone happen to know a link to it?

Use this stuff for MadMax. Avoid legal road use unless Robert Farago reviews it.

Wouldn't mind one... Probably a good addition to my (empty) garage.
