MK4 Golf/Bora 4 Motion info please
Discussion
Hello all, so I've had my project e30 cab for a couple of months and quite frankly I'm not really in love with it. I'm pretty sure it's because I'm missing a VAG in my life. So as much as I'd love another Corrado I'm thinking about something slightly more practical, sensible and newer. This is where the 4 Motion idea comes in. I've checked the basic performance figures and they seem ok, I'm guessing fuel consumption is around the 24/25 mark.
What I'd really like to know is how it compares with my old A3 1.8T sport which was very dissapointing in the corners. It went ok and I got aprox 30MPG out of it, but it had very dull steering lacking any kind of communication. I'm wondering if all MK4 platform cars are the same or not.
I appreciate a test drive will tell me a lot but as I won't push it hard on a TD I was wondering about peoples experiences on here.
Sorry for the epic diatribe.
Thanks
Aaron
p.s I'm open to idea's for cars up to £3K

You'll be hard pushed to get a V6 4motion for 3k i'd say.
I have one, and stock..it handles like a dog. Suspension is setup for comfort...so very soft, and a mess around corners.
The "4motion" feature is a gimic unless you get an uprated haldex controller (£500 fitted), as in stock form..the back wheels only kick in when the front lose traction which isn't very often.
For £3k...you could get a very nice late VR6 with uprated shocks...although it still won't compare to your old Corrado...

Corrado VR6 - it has to be done, rear seats are usable
The 4motion stuff is good if it is fettled with. A set of Eibach suspension and anti roll bars would make a huge difference without making the car overly harsh or excessively low. Point to point the 24v motor is a lot better than the VR6 but in my view doesnt have half the charactor or the sound!
£3k will get you a good selection of golfs in 5 door format. The boras are a little harder to come by.
I get the impression you are a VR man but if you consider the A3 does come in 1.8t quattro format with 180hp motor kind of like a baby S3 and these can be picked up for <£3k. Or a real wild card....... a Octavia VRS? gives you something very practical with a but of poke.

I deep down know it's another Corrado I want but I've just got to try and be a bit sensible as what I get will probably be a daily. My old Corrado was just a weekend toy.
To me there really isn't a much better sound than a hard charging VR especially with a induction kit or decent panel filter!
Not too sure on the Quattro A3 front, having owned a normal 1.8T A3 before and being very dissappointed with it, in terms of steering feel or lack of!
Don't really want a car I'd need to modify to get the best out of it, as has been suggested with the 4 motion and I've seen with A3's.
The Skoda, now there's a thought, really the only issue is my personal views on the stigma's attached to the brand. I appreciate it's a very dumb reason to be put off a car.
The only option I can certainly rule out is a Leon Cupra, as after having had the pleasure of a full fat 225 BHP Cupra R for a week once I'd only be let down by a lesser one.

I see your dilema and it is difficult not to be put off the skoda by the badge as you have to consider the effect it has on the resale value and if it is meant to be a sensible purchase then you dont want a car to half in value every couple of years.
If you consider that a normal leon 180hp cupra does still have the 6 speed box and better suspension/wheel/brake set up compared to the octavia which only has a 5 speed box which does effect its drivablity - they are long gears so it doesnt have quite the same mid range delivery as cupra but then agian i have only driven a cupra briefly.
remember you can always remap the standard leon or vrs to be over 200hp for £300 or so for a generic map.

Ok so now I'm thinking the Leon might be good fun. Good article and I generally agree with what Honest John has to say in his Telegraph motoring section.
Thanks for that Dave, really good of you to send the link. I'm off to Autotrader for a little look and def going to be cleaning and getting the E30 ready to advertise this weekend.

No problem, i have been looking into similar cars for a while now so done a fair bit of research plus i notice youre on the ball when it comes to VAG stuff so more inclined to help a fella out! Thanks for that Dave, really good of you to send the link. Consider you can buy a leon for so much less than the equivalent passat, A4/6, 3 series, C class there might even be enough left in your budget for another VR6.... keep seeing some scandalously cheap VR6 golfs which would make good toys to abuse and throw away.. or in my case more likely act as a donor for a mk2 swap ;-)

Yeah I know mate, I have a funny feeling I'll test a Leon and think it's nice then do the dumb thing and test drive a MK3 VR fall in love with the engine note again and probably although I know the Leon is the sensible car buy the Golf!
Then probably end up modding it even though thats not meant to happen either!
