Just finished a 16 hour shift straight through the night, on the way home - the *bleeping* speedo stops working!

Anyone have any idea how hard it is to diagnose / fix on a G reg golf?

Im hoping its just the cable, but havent ever looked at one of those, im massively sleep deprived and dont want to risk screwing it up....

Got to pick up my boss from the airport at 3am, then another solid day ahead so really should be getting some sleep but slightly worried about getting scamera'd on the way to Gatwick!
(My licence cant take any more abuse, its WHY im driving an old golf! Insurance on anything vaguely tasty is too painful to contemplate)

Ok half rant half plea for ideas lol

*edited to add that my workshop manual seems to have gone AWOL, hence the question...*

Could be as simple as the cable is diconnected from the speedo head (instrument pod).

Question: Prior to its failure, did the speedo needle constantly jump? If so then its the cable.
If its just stopped working then its most likely disconnected.
Note, its unlikely that its disconnected at the gearbox end due to them being bolted in.

G-reg Golf - later Mark 2 then.

Hmmm - I had the same on mine twice. First time it was the cable - the shielding brakes down over the years and moisture gets is and it eventually ceases. New cable needed, but it is a bit of a sod to fix.

Quick diagnostic - take the speedo unit out - If you have a reversable drill, put that on the back of the speedo unit to see if it still works with the cable disconneted.
