90 Quattro 20V
Discussion
I seem to have owned most of the old Audis people are asking about on here!
I originally bought mine to get the 170bhp, 5 cylinder engine in a cheaper car than a coupe. Mine was sold to a friend 5 years ago and is still going strong with over 150K.
Plus points:
Nice engine, smooth and powerful, quattro traction, galvanised body, handles better than a coupe, cheap, reliable, better spec than an 80, build quality, discreet.
Bad points, small boot, most of the power is at the top end, err not much else.
Try and find a 90 20V Quattro Sport. These are rare but give you better seats, extra gauges and a neat rear spoiler.
Check the diff lock operation, ABS (often just dirty sensors) and condition of wheels. The Speedlines originally fitted are notorious for corrosion around the allen head bolts and many have been replaced by aftermarket alloys.
Some people had problems with alternator drives (its plastic for some reason) but mine was OK.
The engine and transmission are good for huge mileages if properly serviced.
Common sense rules really. It shouldnt be rusty at all due to full galvanisation, look at servicing and check the handling is taut. Exhausts can be expensive so check its OK.
Great car!
