Hi guy's, i currently own a TVR Chimaera and i'm to looking to sell it and get another car. One of the cars i'm thinking about is an S6 probably a year 2000/2001. I don't know much about the cars, are they reliable and are the running costs high? i imagine they have a bit of poke but i'm not expecting TVR levels of performance. Is there anything is should look out for? any help would be appreciated.

They are incredibly thirsty ( 12-14mpg) the parts are quite expensive too. Super car when theyre running right, fantastic grip, 340bhp and very solid and roomy

I've a 2001 S6 on an X plate.
Had it for 3 years now and it's been a joy to own.
Very reliable with the exception of the gearbox failing at 117k yesterday.
ouch!!!

Hi Aardvark

Sorry to hear about your gearbox - what quotes have you had?

Also, what sort of MPG could you expect on a nice traffic free A-road run?

Hi,

I have had an X reg saloon for a couple of years now, I average just over 20mpg on a mixture of motorways and my daily ten mile commute. Reliability has been good, a few minor niggles aside like a CV gaitor, a sticky electric window and I currently have an intermittent sensor fault. I had to get a cambelt change whhich was a bit costly but other than that I use a specialist (MRC in Banbury) for all servicing and repairs which makes a big difference.

The only downside is tyres which are a slightly odd size and high speed/load rating so are not cheap, plus being 4 wheel drive you often have to replace them all at the same time, annoying if you get a puncture.

I love mine, big, comfy, quick and looks good but is discrete enough not to be noticed.

So the S6 has a cambelt but the S4 a chain?

I'm trying to figure out if I'd be happy with one. What did you pay for a cambelt at MRC if you don't me asking!? The more prices I get the more I can try to figure out if it would leave me with no spare cash! Still, that might be a price worth paying!

Yup - S6 V8 is belts like the C5 RS6.

The motor was substantially redesigned for its instalation in the B6 S4 model, including re-siting the cam belt mechanism to a chain driven system at the rear (bulkhead side) of the block.

Belts V necessary so I'd get them done as soon as you buy one. Typical specialist price would be £600 ish I feel.

That being said RS6s are becoming seriously affordable.

Do you not fancy going the whole-hog and getting an RS as opposed to the S?

I'd love an RS but at the end of the day I couldn't justify the running costs. I imagine if a turbo went or I had a faulty gearbox I'd be gutted to spend so much on it!!
