Is this achievable with inexpensive used TDi VW or Seat?

Happy to improve air filter / box and replace rear box, even fit larger diameter wheels / tyres

Anything going to approach 220 lb ft torque and 70 mpg cruise / 60 mpg overall with such mods?

Will you come down another step to 65mph / 65mpg next week? That might actually be achievable.

my golf gt tdi 150 (236 lb/ft) does about 63mpg on quiet motorway runs when i stick to 70 but i tend to do 80 more often and get 50-55mpg.

Its fking boring at 70 trying to be economical

Lupo or Arosa 1.4tdi should achieve those figures with relative ease

I use M40/M25, sometimes traffic conditions mean it is faster + easier to sit in the inside lane with the trucks rather than dodge, weave and braaaaaake with the muppets. I have got over 70mpg once, guess speed would be 55/60 ish - 85 minutes for 60 mile journey, 50 of which is motorway.

Can't seem to do it this time of year though - guess combination of extra fuel for colder start, lights + wipers, haven't got over 63mpg for some weeks.

This on a standard PD130, usually running on Total Excellium with tyres pumped up to the high end of the recommended range.

Is that the Golf? - What yr did they come out? - Inote from some of the guides the 130 and 150 are prone to engine failure..since I intend to get it remapped, am i on dodgy ground already?!

There are a lot of PD remapped engines on UKMKIVs that have done stellar mileages.

From what I understand an aggressive remap is more likely to cook your clutch than your engine.

see other responses....I assumed it must be possible if I can cruise at c 40 mpg in an old 2.5 V6 petrol auto Omega -- It all depends how good you are at economy driving (I used to average 16 mpg in an STi Prodrive when driving with, ahem, a little more liberation..)

I feel confident cruising in the 60s must be achievable in a number of cars and remain interested to see what options there are - as i am sure many other viewers are.

I have tried a 2.0 D X Type and 2.2 Pug 406 at the weekend. - Pug seemed slow but comfortable and i suspect c 40 mpg and surprisingly the x type was really quite brisk - acceleration from 70-90 actually appeared quickish, and felt it..! - A tuned 2.2 has to be inteesting - MPG? - Dont know, however i do know the idiot Clarkson managed 50mpg with the 2.7 v6 on the huge XJ recently

I have yet to drive the MK IV TDi golf - anybody got a re-mapped one (or remapped Jag or Pug diesel in Northants area?)

Any thoughts on alcohol injection - does cost of alco exceed any gains?

Yes, Golf. Only engine issue I have heard of is camshaft problems, but that seems to be limited to the 150s. Got 137K on mine so far and aiming for 250K before replacement.

So you can definitely confirm that a MKIV 130 bhp TDi (GT?) Golf can easily return 60-70 mpg with a little effort?

Does the exact model make a difference, eg GT or not? - Presumably larger diameter tyres and higher gearing being best option?

I had the GT TDI115 PD thats a 1.9ltr PD TDI the 130PD came out a little later. There is no difference engine wise between the S/SE/GT spec they are all 130bhp & identical MPOG unless one has auto. These things to amazing MPG mainly due to the fact @70mph your doing 1850rpm which is just below peak torque. YUou will not be disappointed with it its a good honest car that will keep on going just change the oil every 10k and routine servicing these cars are incredible really rock solid

Just thought I'd mention I've got a 2002 Golf GT TDi 130 and frequently get 70mpg on my daily commute. I drive from Durham to North Yorkshire and back on the A1 and maintain 60mph the whole way. My best yet is 70.6mpg but I think there was a tail wind! My car is completely stock, but I have nitrogen filled tyres at 40psi front, and 38psi rears. I'm looking forward to the summer when I can get away without using my lights and wipers.

If you can stand left hand drive then an A2 1.2 tdi would probably hit the 70/70 target.

the roads, traffic and driving style will have as much to do with your MPG as the car itself. A change in these factors can add a good few 10%'s onto your economy.
if you get clear consistent running then 60mpg is achievable, i have had over 40mpg twice on 200mile+ runs whit a remapped 1.8T a6 avant. Yes boring as hell but with all the family onboard its a different sort of challenge.

70mph is the sticking block, if you were at 60mph then it might be more likely. wind resistance isnt a linear scale you need considerably more effort as you pass 60mph to get the same forward lunge.

Could you link me to some owners of these? - An easy 65mpg at 65-70 would seem realistic, particularly given that most re-mappers claim 10% improved economy - indeed that would suggest that my original goal of 75mpg at 75 is pretty close to achievable, particularly with larger diameter tyres to reduce revs to similar to that of 65mph (the 10% improvement to offset increased aerodrag should at least allow for 70mpg at 70mph...?) - I would be quite happy hitting cruise @ 70mph for 70mpg, even if oil cos and government are hell bent on fleecing their promoted 'green' form of motoring by taking cheaper than petrol derv to more expensive - typical cynical governmental con...

Re-mappers, any evidence to support our theory above?

cheers prom' - mpg certainly covers broad range for claimed similar driving of same car - thogh not sure of model variations other than by power, eg PD?1 - If i get one i would prob target the 130 GT due to 150 reliability issues - then re-map it - however no idea about what options on a theme are avail for this supposedly bullet proof engine.. - suggestions (I would take a manual, with decent creature comforts - so if GT is silly hothatch stiff then i would exclude that, after all it is no sportscar)
