Anyone come across this before? When the wheel is turned to the left at speed I get a "strange grinding noise"(c) which seems to be coming from the centre/ front of the chassis.

Go on, astound me with your acumen!

I try not to carry passengers Chris; they slow you down and get in the way. I thought maybe wheel bearing too though, except I'd expect it to make a bit of noise even in a straight line if it was on the way out. And I think it would only grind if it was completely collapsed. Dunno about CV joint problems . . .

I've now moved on to suspecting the suspension top mounts (with apologies for my double post earlier). Apparently it's a common problem. Anybody else had this? Cheers, Nick.

So presumably you only get it while turning the steering wheel, and once it's on a constant amount of lock it stops?

Yes to the first question Chris - I'll get back to you on the 2nd. I had it in my head it was constant regardless of the amount of turn but I'll check it out on the way home tonight. Cheers for your interest mate - appreciated.

Chris - the grinding is apparent regardless of the amount of lock on the wheel and only disappears once the car has returned to a straight line after its leftward trajectory. If I didn't know better, I'd swear it sounds like a tyre catching on the arch or something similar (but it ain't that).
I'm gonna check the exhaust mountings out this weekend and take it from there.

What type of Coupe have you got?
If you are front drive only please ignore

I had a similar noise on my Ur Quattro. When I turned left at speed there was a grinding noise.
It turned out to be the exhaust catching the propshaft / rear diff casing. The path of the mid and rear pipes goes very close to the rear drivetrain gubbins. Repostioned the exhaust and problem solved.

It turned out to be a broken sway bar rubbing on the driveshaft. £50 later and all is well. There you go...
