Hi all

We are looking to get rid of our 56 cooper S due to lots of issues. We will look to spend around 9-10k cash on an Audi, possibly either a TT convertible or A3. We would like something of similar performance (180+bhp, 0-60 of 6-7 seconds) so suggestions welcome

Also, in terms of reliablility we want something that wont need a replacement clutch after 23k miles!! mpg not important

The old shape S3 fits your current criteria easily, i'm guessing as you've listed a TT as a possible option you don't need 5 doors etc?

Failing that, B7 model S4's (the 4.2 v6 iirc) can't be too far off that

Yeah there is only two of us so 5 doors not important. Would consider a VW too, poss Golf GTI

I will look at the S4. And yes S3 is nice, ive looked at that smile

one more thought - maybe a rs2 ( 300 odd bhp) & prices shouldn't be effected as badly as more modern cars

There was a ph heroes write up of them a while back

They are a 4.2 V8 and you won't get a B7 for £10k, and even if you can get a B6 for that, which I doubt, it will have been to the moon and back.

hi mate,

Personally i would go for the golf gti, i have an 07 and still loving it.

previously had an a3 sport 130tdi at 45K needed turbo replaced and syrnos in 3rd gear replaced.
Replaced with a a4 s-line 2.0tdi - at 11K new clutch fitted.

No more audis for me (although i probably was unlucky) the golf is much better specked (spelling!!) and cheaper and for me a better car. Although each to their own opinion

The golf is a pleasure to drive with plenty of torque and pulling power - cant go wrong, good time to pick one up at the right money with the mk 6 around the corner

You could get a b6 s4 v8 for 10k i should think. They make a lovely noise and if anything like my diesel a4 are very well put together.

I have an 8L S3. Great little car. Slightly lowered on Eibach suspension, 62000 miles on it, and the only issue I have had is with the oil level sensor which was a cheap and easy fix.

Not the most involving car to drive, but for a mix of motorway cruising and a and b road blasting which is my usual driving I can't ask for a better car for my budget. Eats up the miles without a problem, amazing seats, great interior and with a few minor mods to the suspension and brakes is not a bad handler.

Thanks everyone. I am definitely going to look at both the S3 and Golf GTI. Prob drive both and decide from there. Might be slightly biased towards S3 as 4WD and a bit more power, but prefer look of GTI!

I will let you know what we decide smile

Leon Cupra R? Very very good car, I'd guess it would be quicker than the S3 given the lack of 4wd and same power. Seriously it's plenty quick enough round the bends too. I suspect you'd only notice the benefit of the S3 4wd when on a track.

My B6 is in the classifieds, 90k miles 4.2 V8 £8,750. The marktes just that bad at the moment.
