Changing brakes, Golf Mk4 GTI
Discussion
cant say on the golf, but Ive changed discs and pads on loads of cars, and its incredibly simple (usually)
did an astra and my triumph bike this weekend...
two bolts (or an allen key as well) get the brake calliper off.
a screwdriver gets the disc off.
replace disc
ajustable length plier thingys are needed to squeeze back in the pad pushers (im hopeless with the proper technical names!) - watch the brake fluid resivoir under the bonnet, suck up unwanted overflow with a paper towel ** dont touch the stuff or spill it, its highly corrosive!! surround the resivoir with a cloth to be extra safe.
Remove old pads, clean off old brake dust from the calliper with a wire brush,** re grease with tiny amounts of copper grease (halfords £1.99 for all you could ever want) dont get any on the pad fronts!!
put pads in, put over disc, do up bolts.
PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL ; to get the pads back in place. (they wont even stop you for a mile or two!!)
and bed them in gentley for 100 miles.
very simple really, and save £100 in garage labour.
**NOTE: dont breath in the brake dust when cleaning - its very harmful, wear a mask to be safe.
