Mk1 Karmann GTI Convertable

Hi All
After a bit of advice. Been offered an 1983 GTI convertable in black with red leather interior.
Its a proper Karmann from the factory
Car has stood in a garage for the last 5 years following a minor engine loom fire.
Apart from the loom, no other damage. Bodywork and hood are sound, car is almost standard, and was running well before the fire.
The guy selling it is the brother of one of my missus mates, seems decent enough chap, had good intentions of fixing the car, but time and other commitments have conspired against him, and he has to get it out of the garage.
He's offered it to me for £300.
He's going to get me a few pics, but what's the gut feeling of the VW folk on PH.
Should I run a mile or take it on.
I've got plenty of time, and good working conditions and I'm sure I'm capable of sorting it out.
Have to say I'm very tempted
Edited to add its a 1.8
Wouldn't you get £200 scrap for it anyway - so the risk is only £100 to start the tinkering...After a bit of advice. Been offered an 1983 GTI convertable in black with red leather interior.

SWEET!!
that is definately worth £250 anyday of the week. Good choice about the loom , i leanrt the hard way about pissing around trying to trace an repair odd wires instead of chucking in a new loom
The interior looks very smart , bit of wear on drivers bolster but that is standard. A 1.8 is also better engine and the hood looks sound. As long as it is structually sound underneith then its well worth spending a bit on it and getting back on the road.
Cool project - keep us updated.

FYI they are all Karmann cars as they were built by Karmann for VW.

first thing to check is the filler kneck, more than likely it will need a new one, give it a very good poking! there are a few niggly little things with cabbys or any mk1 and the mk1 owners club/golf website will give you all the help you need
(mines up for sale for anyone who wants one by the way)
