Go into your satchel and pull out your crystal ball, that will help. However if you dont have a crystal ball then some more information on what car you have and if it has the capability to tell you MPG, might actually help, but not always.

How long is that piece of string that i cant see from here? hehe

Look in the instruction manual, all the detail will be in there

the instruction manual is written for all golf models of 2004, so its not very specific to my car, ive read somewhere that you 'activate' via vagcom? if thats the case i should just ring the VW dealership.

On my GTI ("Mid range display" (??)) push the end of the wiper stalk until it scrolls round.
It (range) is in there with the mpg, av mpg, av mph, trip miles, driving time etc.

Not sure about other Golfs.

Those would be the older VW's with trip computers that give you this information.

If there's no rocker switch on the end of the wiper stalk, there's nothing to scroll through therefore you have a boggo trip computer therefore it won't tell you the range.

is it possible to retrofit this new wiper stalk, and then also put in a highline computer? what other things can be programmed on the car?

Just consult the fuel gauge - it'll be a hell of a lot cheaper. When it gets towards the bottom put more fuel in.

The miles to empty is rubbish anyway - i once did 65 miles in my Audi with it reading zero miles left.

Don't bother, my Audi can tell me all this sort of gumpf - I enthusiastically flicked through them all probably for at least a couple of days of driving, now it just sits there on whatever it's been on since last time I knocked the stalk. miles of fuel remaining is one of the most useless as it depends entirely on your driving style, which isn't going to be the same for a whole tank, or even a part of a tank.
