Hello everyone,

I have a 2004 Audi A3 3.2 which has developed a noisy ventilation fan. It's a ticking noise which gets faster or slower directly proportional to how high or low you have the fan speed.

Has anyone had this before, and if so, what was the cure? Rough price to fix it?

Thank you in advance.

Could be the motor. Do you park under trees? Might be getting leaves into system. Probably not that cheap (but not silly expensive) going by cost of replacing mine.

Fan is electric so I don't think it runs in time with engine rpm ? i could be wrong though.
My BMW 330 is doing this at the moment and its the a/c compressor. If the clutch is engaged (a/c on) it can be heard, of a/c switched off its silent.
You might want to check this ?

There was no reference to engine RPM in the original post. He said if was in proportion to the fan speed

I don't park under trees especially often. It's either garaged or on the driveway and there are no trees around. None at the office car park either. How much did it cost to have your motor replaced?

I can't remember. It was just heater motor I think. Was three years ago. Could have been £90, maybe more. I'm sure Audi specialist will be able to diagnose fault correctly.

Quite a common problem on the older A4`s etc. Worth removing the gove box and removing/checking the fan 1st.

I doubt a leaf etc has entered the air intake as the pollen filter will take care of most.

Valio provide a replacment fan for most Audi VW, cheap enough.

Emma and Phil - thank you both for your helpful replies. When I get the time, I'll look into it. Too much DIY to do first though! And with that, it's back to the light fittings...
