Hi All
I wonder If i could ask for some feedback on A8 models, particularly the 3.0 TDI and 4.00 TDI models.
I am looking at trading in my 2002 Jag XKR Coupe in for a roomier more economical motor, and the A8 seems to fit the bill perfectly.
After being used to 400 BHP (and sub 18 MPG!), I am concerned that the A8 may feel a little sluggish and barge like. Is there much performance difference between the 4.0 and 3.0? I also seem to remember seeing a previous post stating that the 3.0 TDI was the smoother engine due to the fact it uses later technology? Would you guys agree with this?
I have looked at a coupe of early pre facelift 2005 models, and a late 2005 facelift model (with grill). What other changes were made to the facelift models apart from later grill? ( I am refering to 2005 facelift, not 2007 one).
Thanks for any input guys.

I've just moved from an Xj8 to a 3.0D. Fabulous car and not short of shove, but they are very different. Its the lack of rev range that I have really noticed.
Lots of torque and you can get it tuned for quite a bit more, but its character is so different from that V8 which I never tired of - the sound and the way the power builds on the Jag is fantastic.
I loved the Jag and did 100k in it, and overall the A8 is a much better car - better put together and much more modern.I used to get 21 mpg and now it is never below 35 and often near 40. But it has less character to look at and to drive.
I'm very happy with it, its the first oil burner I've had and whilst the power numbers are in the same ball park, the character is just totally different.
I'd like to try a 4.2 petrol or S8 to see how much of the difference is down to the engine and how much is the nature of the car, because they really are chalk and cheese.

I'm afraid my name is neither James, nor do I have either TDI - I went for the 4.2 V8 to save £5k on the purchase price, yet still get 28mpg on a run, so nice and frugal considering the performance..... well worth it if you want to keep using petrol rather than derv.
Facelift was tweakage, the obvious grille and a handful of other bits.
You could always have the 3.0 chipped for a bit of extra poke?

Thought I would update you all!
Had a look at a 2005 Black 3.0 TD Quattro tiptronic on Saturday. Fab to drive and full of kit. Just love the MMI !
Amazed at the torque. Obviously not as neck snapping as the XKR, but really not too far behind.
I am sure i remember reading that the 3.00 is a great candidate for chipping. Has anyone had any experience and can reccomend a chipping company.
Also, can the LED daytime running lights be retrofitted? Audio dealer says no, but i wondered if anyone knew different !!

I haven't had personal experience of this company, and I'm not connected with them in any way, but it is a distributor for MTM remapping. MTM is Germany's premier Audi modifier. I will be getting QST to do my 2005 A8 3.0TDI remapping soon.

I know of a company with experience in remapping these engines, and getting a lot out of it if you don't mind it being a bit of a smoker (i'm currently looking at a 3.0 TDi Phaeton and would be wanting it chipped also). If you want any more info, give me an e-mail and i'll pass on all the details to you.
Cheers,
Craig.
P.S. Its close by too, as I see your in the North West as I am
